Spell out the names of states except in postal addresses and in lists. Commas should set apart the name of the city and the state: She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her golden retriever. If using state abbreviations in a list, use upper/lowercase abbreviations, not two-letter postal code abbreviations: Ala., Calif., Fla., Ky., N.Y., etc.
- The following state names are never abbreviated: Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas, and Utah.
