Episcopal Church Writing Style Guide

states

Spell out the names of states except in postal addresses and in lists. Commas should set apart the name of the city and the state: She lives in Portland, Oregon, with her golden retriever. If using state abbreviations in a list, use upper/lowercase abbreviations, not two-letter postal code abbreviations: Ala., Calif., Fla., Ky., N.Y., etc.

  • The following state names are never abbreviated: Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas, and Utah.
