headlines
- Capitalization is not required in a headline except for the first word, proper nouns, and the first word after a colon.
- Avoid acronyms unless very widely recognized, such as UK, UN, US, FBI. (Note that in regular text, U.K., U.N., and U.S. use periods, but not in headlines. USA, FBI, and CIA are among well-known acronyms that contain no periods in body text or headlines.)
- Use numerals in headlines; don’t spell out numbers unless in formal name or casual use. 75 attend racial reconciliation webinar. Committee offers 3 sessions.
- Use single quotation marks in a headline, not double quotes.
- Effective article headlines generally use a strong subject-verb (often present tense) construction.
