After a year and a half of thoughtful, inclusive discernment, the General Convention Worship Committee has announced the outline for multiple liturgical services that will “highlight a broad cross-section of embodied expressions of worship from around the church” at the eight-day churchwide gathering in Baltimore in July 2022.

“An Overview of Worship for The 80^th General Convention of The Episcopal Church” details the first phase of the worship committee’s mandate to creatively develop and implement eight liturgical services during General Convention, the triennial gathering of the church’s governing body. A 28-member group—named in the report—set the stage for work that will next include designers, then implementors. The worship committee includes laity, deacons, priests, and bishops from across the church.

“This report reflects the work of a genuinely diverse group of souls who sought to dream of liturgical experiences at our upcoming General Convention that authentically, and with cultural integrity, reflect something of the ethnic, cultural, and liturgical depth and diversity of The Episcopal Church,” Presiding Bishop Michael Curry said. “This prayerful process and effort will benefit us greatly as we worship the Almighty God of love ‘in spirit and in truth,’ just as Jesus taught us.”

During six 90-minute meetings during 2019-2020, the planning group considered how Convention liturgies might elevate the unity and diversity of the church, taking into consideration “pastoral implications of the pandemic and the atrocities of recent and long-term racial unrest.”

The July 7 opening Eucharist will highlight the church’s corporate desire to seek God’s forgiveness and strength for the journey ahead, emphasizing the word “turn,” one of the seven practices of the Way of Love commitment instituted by Curry.

The July 9 revival will highlight the local and cultural context of Baltimore, as well as showcase how the church can be connected virtually. Satellite locations will link to the main revival service.

The concluding Eucharist on July 14 will reflect “a diverse array of languages and cultures present at the 80^th General Convention,” the report states.

Next steps include the final selection of preachers and presiders, and the design of each liturgy, including digital media and on-site scenic elements. Each design group will include a lead designer, musician, and deacon. Final meetings and rehearsals for each service will take place in the spring.
