With the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, I offer heartfelt prayers for His Holiness Pope Francis and all members of the Roman Catholic Church throughout the world. As followers of Jesus, we know that death does not have the final word.  In 1 Thessalonians 4:13, the Apostle Paul reminded that first generation of Christians that they need not grieve as those who have no hope.

The former pontiff, a renowned theologian, echoed Paul when he said that “one who has hope lives differently.” Benedict’s passing occurs at the end of a year that for so many continued to be fraught with great difficulties and uncertainties—both personal and global. Amid such struggles, may we indeed live differently, with hope, and follow the Way of Love. 

And may Benedict, and all who have died, rest in peace.

Con la muerte del papa emérito Benedicto XVI, ofrezco sinceras oraciones por Su Santidad el papa Francisco y todos los miembros de la Iglesia Católica Romana en todo el mundo. Como seguidores de Jesús, sabemos que la muerte no tiene la última palabra. En 1 Tesalonicenses 4:13, el apóstol Pablo le recordó a esa primera generación de cristianos que no necesitan afligirse como los que no tienen esperanza.

El anterior pontífice, y notable teólogo, se hacía eco de las palabras de Pablo al decir «el que tiene esperanza vive de otra manera». El fallecimiento de Benedicto se produce al final de un año que para tantos siguió estando plagado de grandes dificultades e incertidumbres, tanto personales como globales. En medio de esos conflictos, que en verdad vivamos de manera diferente, con esperanza, y que sigamos el Camino del Amor.

Y que Benedicto, y todos los que han muerto, descansen en paz.
