Nominees accepted for Episcopal Church bishop suffragan for Armed Forces and Federal Ministries

Nominees are being accepted for The Episcopal Church bishop suffragan for Armed Forces and Federal Ministries. Based in Washington, D.C, the bishop suffragan is a member of Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s staff.

The deadline for submitting nominees or applying is Sept. 15. The election is slated for the March 2023 meeting of the House of Bishops.

The bishop suffragan of Armed Forces and Federal Ministries is a Department of Defense-appointed Ecclesiastical Endorser with responsibility for Episcopal chaplains and congregations in the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The Office of Armed Forces and Federal Ministries supports federal chaplains providing spiritual and day-to-day support for those in the military, veterans affairs hospitals, and prisons.

The Rt. Rev. Carl Wright, bishop suffragan of Armed Forces and Federal Ministries, recently retired due to health reasons. Oversight of the bishop suffragan search process comes under the Office of Pastoral Formation, under the direction of Bishop Todd Ousley.

How to apply
Applications and nominations must be in computer file format for transmission by email and processing online. Basic applications/nominations will include: 1) a resume of no more than two pages; 2) an Office of Transition Ministry profile; 3) biographical information not exceeding two pages; and 4) a statement as to why the applicant/nominee is well suited to this position. 

These documents should be in PDF or Word format and emailed to Gerardo Mazariegos.

Application and nomination information will also be available shortly on the Armed Forces and Federal Ministries website.

Search committee 
The search committee is chaired by Christopher Weaver, retired U.S. Navy rear admiral. Committee members include Razz Waff, retired Army major general; Paul Minor, Army National Guard brigadier general; the Rev. Susan Sowers, St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, Pensacola, Florida; Canon Carl Andrews, retired Air Force colonel; Christina Mucuuthi Ng’ethe, chaplain, Federal Bureau of Prisons; and Chandler Irwin, Navy Chaplain Corps lieutenant, Naval District of Washington.
