Greetings from Louisville, Kentucky, the site of The Episcopal Church’s 81st General Convention, which officially starts June 23 and runs through June 28 at the Kentucky International Convention Center. These daily updates from the Office of Public Affairs include news, events, and resources related to GC81.

Today’s highlights

  • Opening presentation: Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and House of Deputies President Julia Ayala Harris delivered opening remarks this afternoon to a joint session of the House of Deputies and House of Bishops. View the presentations online. Those remarks will be transcribed and posted on the Office of Public Affairs’ website.
  • Love Always Episcopal Revival, 7-9 p.m. ET: This special night of churchwide worship and revival at the KFC Yum! Center includes a sermon from Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, in his 27th and final revival of his tenure. Watch on the GC81 Media Hub, The Episcopal Church’s Facebook or YouTube pages. Bishop Curry’s sermon will be transcribed and posted on the Office of Public Affairs’ website.

  • As of Saturday evening, the House of Deputies has 50 resolutions on its consent calendar for Sunday, including seven related to Title IV disciplinary canons; its Special Orders call for consideration of six resolutions related to amendments to the Rules of Order.

Sunday events in Louisville

  • ‘A Case for Love’ documentary, Q&A with filmmakers, 2:30 and 7 p.m. ET
    In celebration of Bishop Curry’s ministry and the film’s Episcopal roots, two free screenings of this feature-length documentary will be offered at the Moritz von Bomhard Theater, 501 West Main St. in Louisville. Filmmakers will be there to respond to questions and provide sample discussion guides for adults and youth in advance of the film’s scheduled digital release this fall. Learn more.
  • Episcopal Church Women 150th birthday party, 7-9 p.m., Hyatt Regency Louisville
    Convention attendees are invited to join the ECW at a special event commemorating its 150 years. Learn more about the ECW’s Triennial gathering at convention.

  • GC Daily Digest, June 22: Committees meet in person for first time

    The 81st General Convention is underway in Louisville, as committees met in person for the first time on June 22, a day before legislative sessions are scheduled to convene in the full House of Bishops and House of Deputies, the official start of the June 23-28 meeting. Nearly all of the more than two dozen committees held meetings.
  • Union of Black Episcopalians honors Presiding Bishop Michael Curry

    “It really hit me that it’s kind of the end of an era,” the Rev. Christopher Slane, priest-in-charge of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. “The whole tenure of Bishop Curry has been a watershed moment for our church not just because he’s the first Black presiding bishop, but because his message of love and the Jesus movement has been so clear. His vision has been so apparent all throughout The Episcopal Church.”
  • Church Pension Group issues report in advance of 81st General Convention

    On June 20 the Church Pension Group issued a report to General Convention in advance of its June 23-28 meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. In it, CPG offered updates on two benefits that were created in 2009 – the Denominational Health Plan for all church employees and a mandatory pension system for lay employees.
