Five of the seven so-called “Aberdeen Bishops,” a group of bishops who received their croziers during the initial surges of the COVID pandemic, gathered today at the 80th General Convention of The Episcopal Church. They are so named because their consecration liturgies–with the minimum number of people present to get the job done–modeled the very early days of The Episcopal Church when bishops like Samuel Seabury, first in the American succession, had to travel Scotland (and others later to England) for consecrations. Those liturgies required a minimum of three bishops to consecrate a new one, and until The Episcopal Church had three bishops in place, consecrations involved transatlantic voyages.
