On its final day in Louisville, Kentucky, the 81st General Convention of The Episcopal Church approved the mergers of three Wisconsin dioceses and two Michigan dioceses, and a much anticipated change in status to missionary diocese for the Episcopal Church in Navajoland.

Earlier during the June 23-28 convention, members approved the expansion of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii to include Guam and Saipan, which formerly comprised the Episcopal Church in Micronesia.

A House of Bishops’ vote to approve Navajo Episcopalians’ request to elevate their area mission to a missionary diocese was met with cheers and applause, echoing a similar celebration following House of Deputies’ adoption of Resolution C009 on June 25.

As a missionary diocese, Navajoland’s members will be able to elect their own bishop for the first time since the mission was established in 1978. They will continue to receive funding and other support from the wider church.

The House of Deputies and House of Bishops also voted to adopt Resolution D051, the “reunion” of the Episcopal Dioceses of Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, and Milwaukee, into the Episcopal Diocese of Wisconsin.

Both houses also voted to ratify an “agreement of union” (C025) for a juncture between the Episcopal Dioceses of Eastern and Western Michigan to create the Episcopal Diocese of the Great Lakes. The dioceses will officially merge later this year.
