Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop and Primate Michael Curry joined the leaders of the Anglican Church of Canada, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in preparing Devotions for the upcoming Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an international Christian ecumenical observance kept annually between January 18 and January 25. The theme of the 2019 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is, “Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue,” (Deuteronomy 16:18-20).

Each of the daily devotions in Justice, and Only Justice, includes Scripture citations, a reflection, and a prayer.  This resource is available for free downloading here.

Daily devotions include:

January 18: “Let justice roll down like water” (Amos 5:22-24); by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, The Episcopal Church.

January 19: “Let your word be ‘yes, yes’ or ‘no, no’” (Matt. 5:33–37); by Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

January 20: “The Lord is gracious and merciful to all” (Psalm 145:8–13); by Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Anglican Church of Canada.

January 21: “Be content with what you have” (Heb. 13:1–5); by National Bishop Susan Johnson, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada.

January 22: “To bring good news to the poor” (Luke 4:16–21); by Presiding Bishop Curry.

January 23: “The Lord of Hosts is his name” (Jer. 10:12–16); by Presiding Bishop Eaton.

January 24: “Woman, great is your faith!” (Matt. 15:21–28); by Archbishop Hiltz.

January 25: “The Lord is my light and my salvation” (Psalm 27:1–4); by Bishop Johnson.

Justice, and Only Justice can be downloaded for websites, bulletin inserts, church programs, and used as discussion points.

The Presiding Bishops of The Episcopal Church, the Anglican Church of Canada, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have been meeting in person on an annual basis to discuss issues of common concern. Colloquially referred to as their “4 Way” meetings, this group has issued joint statements on issues of common concern and provided shared devotional materials for the four Churches.
