Thanksgiving Gratitude Scavenger Hunts!

If you’re like me, you might want to have some ideas for how to entertain everyone when the turkey takes longer to cook then you estimated. Or, you might be more on the ball than I am and would simply like a faith formation item to send home with families to encourage gratitude discussions around the dinner table. Or, perhaps you’re hosting a group of folks who might not know each other well and would like a way to engage everyone in conversation. If you are any of these, or just someone who simply likes a good discussion starter or game, we’ve got the tools for you. Thanks to a quick search on Pinterest and some ideas of our own, we’ve created two different Thanksgiving gratitude scavenger hunts for use at home or church! (These make a great intergenerational activity for coffee hour!) What I love about these scavenger hunts, which I adapted from Pinterest, is that they invite people to share stories. I remember many Thanksgivings when we would go around the table and say something we are thankful for, and it often felt silly, or challenging, or like we had to compete with the thing we were most grateful for, but this makes it a bit broader and more accessible for folks who might like time to think about their answers. The first asks you to go with a teammate and take photos of things you are grateful for. The second invites you to search your phone for photos to show and then tell the story behind why the picture is special. Both encourage conversation, gratitude, and an honoring of experiences. I would end either exercise by passing your Blue Box around because everyone will be feeling very grateful!  Feel free to add to the lists or change things up to meet your context. Whatever you do this Thanksgiving, we hope you’ll encourage people to share stories of gratitude.
