Bilateral and Covenant Relationships

Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil

The Episcopal Church of Brazil was part of The Episcopal Church of the United States for some eighty years until Brazil’s autonomy in 1964. The Episcopal Church (TEC) and  Igreja  Episcopal  Anglicana  do  Brasil  (IEAB) in 2015 celebrated 125 years of shared missionary history that began with the arrival of missionaries from Virginia Seminary to the southern region of Brazil. The Brazilian Church has evolved from a Missionary District of The Episcopal Church to become an autonomous Province within the Anglican Communion—a Church whose missionary zeal and energy, its commitment to justice and ecumenical approach proclaims a living Christ to the Americas and the World.   The IEAB is constituted of nine dioceses and one missionary district. Its recent actions—a Brazilian Book of Common Prayer (2015), the election and ordination of Marinez  Bassoto as their first female Bishop (2018), and General Synod approving the blessing of same-sex marriages (2018)—speak of a Church deeply involved and not afraid to take on the challenges of world and the Gospel.

The 76th General Convention endorsed the “Commitment to be Companions in Christ” covenant between the  Igreja  Episcopal  Anglicana  do  Brasil  and The Episcopal Church. A Bilateral Committee is charged with giving vision and planning to enhance the relationship. This committee meets once every three years. The priority areas for work are partnership opportunities, theological education, resources for mission, and social and climate justice.
