Canticle based on Is 12:2-6, which celebrates the return of Israel from exile. It begins, "Surely it is God who saves me; I will trust in him and not be afraid." Isaiah 12:1-6 presents two songs: Is 12:1-3 is a song of deliverance, and Is 12:4-6 is a song of thanksgiving. The canticle Ecce, Deus is also known as the First Song of Isaiah. It appears as Canticle 9 in Morning Prayer, Rite 2 (BCP, p. 86). It may be used in either Rite 2 or Rite 1 services. The BCP suggests its use at Morning Prayer after the OT reading on Monday, and at Evening Prayer after the OT reading on Saturday (pp. 144-145). The Hymnal 1982 Accompaniment Edition, Vol. 1, provides a variety of musical settings for the Ecce, Deus (S 213-S 216).
