Dear friends in Christ:
“Reconciliation” is the theme for World Mission Sunday this year, which the Episcopal Church will observe on March 2. Our House of Bishops has been focusing on the topic of “Waging Reconciliation” ever since September 2001, and “Reconciliation” is one of the key words for the upcoming General Convention theme of “Engage God’s Mission.”
In Paul’s 2nd Letter to the Corinthians, part of which is highlighted on the enclosed poster, we hear that “God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, has given us the ministry of reconciliation.” Never has this mandate seemed more urgent, nor the work more difficult. May God give us the hearts and minds and wills to heal divisions, break down walls, and create reconciled communities.
The poster is the fourth in a series that we have produced in response to the 1997 General Convention Resolution A205, “that educational opportunities be provided at every level of the church … to increase awareness of and participation in world mission.”
Additional materials and resource suggestions may be found on special pages in the Anglican and Global Relations section of the Episcopal Church web site: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/page/world-mission-sunday. These include a bulletin shell, bulletin insert, and activity sheet for young persons that may be downloaded and photocopied as needed. “Scripture for the Journey,” to assist in personal reflection, and “Homiletical Note” to assist with sermon preparation, are some of the other resources available for your use.
Please note that the resources developed for previous years are still available on the web site or through Episcopal Parish Services (1-800-903-5544). The themes were:
2000 “Hear Their Cry!” focusing on the persecuted church, particularly in Sudan
2001 “We Are A Missionary Church!” (by virtue of our baptism)
2002 “Companionship” (journeying together in God’s mission)
World Mission Sunday materials are not dated, so as to enable choices that might suit particular interests in your parish, congregation, committee, or diocese at any given time.
We would be delighted to share any World Mission Sunday resources that you may have developed on our web pages, so that others may use or adapt them. Feel free to contact me at email@example.com, or by telephone at 1-800-334-7626, ext. 6224.
May God bless you in your ministry, and may we all be reconcilers in Christ.
