Social Justice Advocacy as a Lenten Practice: TANF and Aid for Palestinians and Sudanese

March 2, 2005

"Accept our repentance, Lord, for the wrongs we have done: for our blindness to human need and suffering, and our indifference to injustice and cruelty," from the Ash Wednesday Liturgy, Book of Common Prayer.

Temporary Assistance For Needy Families
On March 31, 2005 the eighth extension of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families will expire. Congress must stop delaying and reauthorize this critical program that funds services to the working poor and children of our nation. House and Senate committees are considering several proposals for reauthorization. Your support is needed to ensure that legislation to reauthorize TANF is not weakened or changed to reduce services for the least among us.

Support Aid for the Palestinians and Sudanese
President Bush has presented a request to Congress for supplemental funds for the 2005 federal budget that includes money to aid the Palestinians and the Sudanese, both in Darfur and in Southern Sudan. While we do not expect any votes against the Sudan aid, we do anticipate efforts to take out some or all of the money for the Palestinians. A strong show of grassroots support will help ensure that both stay in the supplemental budget.
