I have just returned from a trip to the Holy Land with a Churches for Middle East Peace delegation. We visited Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Ramallah, and Tel Aviv. We met and listened to Palestinians - Christians and Muslims - and Israelis, all of whom told us that a two-state solution with Jerusalem as the shared capital is their only hope for a safe and secure future.
Thanks to Churches for Middle East Peace, a broad spectrum of U.S. church leaders has signed a letter to President-elect Obama urging him to make achievement of Israeli-Palestinian peace an immediate priority during his first year in office.
You can join Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and other Christian leaders in telling President-elect Obama that we will support his diplomatic leadership in fulfilling his campaign promise to engage in Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking as soon as he takes office. Holy Land peace cannot be postponed.
The people we met in the Holy Land see the vision of a two-state solution with Jerusalem as the shared capital narrowing, but they believe that strong U.S. leadership can make it a reality. This letter is a tangible way for us to support them and to take their message to President-elect Obama. I hope you will sign the attached letter and circulate it widely.
Blessings to all of you this Advent season,
Director of Government Relations
