INDIA: Archbishop of Canterbury expresses shock and outrage at atrocities in Mumbai

November 27, 2008

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has written to the High Commissioner of India, Shiv Shankar Mukherjee, expressing his shock and outrage at the appalling atrocities in Mumbai and offering on behalf of the whole Anglican Communion prayers for those who have lost loved ones, for the injured and for all those caring for them or dealing with the ongoing siege.

At least 170 people have been killed and 300 injured after gunmen November 26 targeted at least seven sites in India's financial capital, including the city's main commuter train station, a hospital, a restaurant, a Jewish center and luxury hotels.

"People everywhere stand in solidarity with the innocent and in condemnation of those who would destroy innocent lives out of evil and misguided motives," Williams said in a November 27 letter to Mukherjee.
