General Seminary set to offer Saturday courses for Deacons

April 25, 2008

General Theological Seminary (GTS) will be offering three continuing education courses focused on enhancing the ministry of deacons. Following a survey of the continuing education needs of deacons serving in a number of dioceses, GTS has begun a new series of one-day courses specifically tailored to the unique demands of diaconal ministry. The classes also offer CEU's (continuing education units). Over the next year, the Seminary plans to expand the number of these courses. The three being offered from May through September are: "Preaching for Deacons" with the Rev. Barbara Cawthorne Crafton, May 17. Engage and examine methods for more effective preaching, focusing on the unique needs of deacons. Cost: $150 (includes lunch). "From Mercy to Advocacy: Nurturing Leaders to Address the Root of Social Challenges" with Deacon Rex McKee, July 19. Develop skills for building networks of advocacy and accountability in your local communities. Cost: $150 (includes lunch). "Leading Bible Study for Deacons" with Dr. Deirdre Good, September 29. Learn new methods for leading congregational Bible Study. Cost: $150 (includes lunch). A discount of $75 will be given to those signing up for all three courses at once.
