Bishop Gonzalez, formerly of Cuba, dies at 94

The Rt. Rev. José A. Gonzalez, former Bishop of Cuba (1967-1982) died on July 20 of natural causes. He was 94.


Gonzalez and his wife, Graciela, came to the United States after his retirement and settled in Union City, New Jersey. He served as an assisting bishop in the diocese of Newark from 1982 to 1989. They were also active parishioners of Grace Church, Union City.


Gonzalez was born in Colon, Cuba on February 19, 1914. He received a B.A./B.S. degree from La Progresiva in 1940; a certificate from the DuBose School in 1942, and a bachelor of divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1963. He also held an honorary doctor of divinity (1974) and a master’s degree (1974) from VTS.


He was ordained a deacon in June of 1943, and a priest the following February. He was consecrated bishop of the Havana-based Diocese of Cuba in 1967.


Graciela, Bishop Gonzalez’s wife of 64 years, died in March of this year. He is survived by his brother, the Rev. Oscar Gonzalez, retired rector of Grace Church and current priest-in-charge at Calvary Church in Bayonne, and several nieces and nephews.


A viewing is scheduled for July 21 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Morgado Funeral Home, 525 45th Street, Union City, New Jersey (201.867.0820).


A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, July 22 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 3901 Park Avenue, Union City, New Jersey (201.863.6334). Interment will follow the service at Flower Hill Cemetery, 5433 Kennedy Boulevard, North Bergen, New Jersey. A luncheon at Grace Church will follow the interment.
