Rite I:
Lord God, who didst inspire thy servants John and Charles Wesley with burning zeal for the sanctification of souls and didst endow them with eloquence in speech and song: Kindle such fervor in thy church, we beseech thee, that those whose faith has cooled may be warmed, and those who have not known thy Christ may turn to him and be saved; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Lesson: Isaiah 6:1–8

¹In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. ²Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. ³And one called to another and said:
‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory.’ 
⁴The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. ⁵And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’

⁶Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. ⁷The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ ⁸Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’

Psalm: Psalm 129

¹ “Greatly have they oppressed me since my youth,” *
let Israel now say;
² “Greatly have they oppressed me since my youth, *
but they have not prevailed against me.”
³ The plowmen plowed upon my back *
and made their furrows long.
⁴ The Lord, the Righteous One, *
has cut the cords of the wicked.
⁵ Let them be put to shame and thrown back, *
all those who are enemies of Zion.
⁶ Let them be like grass upon the housetops, *
which withers before it can be plucked;
⁷ Which does not fill the hand of the reaper, *
nor the bosom of him who binds the sheaves;
⁸ So that those who go by say not so much as,
“The Lord prosper you. *
We wish you well in the Name of the Lord.”

Second Lesson: Romans 12:11-17 

¹¹ Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. ¹² Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. ¹³ Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

¹⁴ Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. ¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. ¹⁶ Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. ¹⁷ Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.

Gospel: Luke 9:1-6

¹Then Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, ²And he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. ³He said to them, ‘Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money—not even an extra tunic. ⁴Whatever house you enter, stay there, and leave from there. ⁵Wherever they do not welcome you, as you are leaving that town shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.’ ⁶They departed and went through the villages, bringing the good news and curing diseases everywhere.
