Wainwright, Jonathan Mayhew

(Feb. 24, 1792-Sept. 21, 1854). Bishop and music editor. He was born in Liverpool, England, and came to the United States in 1803. He graduated from Harvard in 1812. Wainwright was ordained deacon on Apr. 13, 1817, and priest on May 29, 1818. He was assistant minister, Trinity Church, New York, 1819-1821; rector, Grace Church, New York, 1821-1834; rector, Trinity Church, Boston, 1834-1836; and assistant minister, Trinity Church, New York, 1836-1852. While at Grace Church, New York, he edited Music of the Church: A Collection of Psalms, Hymns and Chant Tunes adapted to the Worship of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States (1823). This collection went through at least ten editions, the last one published in 1849. When Bishop Benjamin T. Onderdonk of New York was suspended from office on Jan. 3, 1845, Wainwright was elected provisional bishop. Wainwright was consecrated on Nov. 10, 1852, and served as the fourth Bishop of New York until his death.
