St Luke’s Church, Smithfield, Virginia

This church, also known as Old Brick Church, is near Smithfield in Isle of Wight County. It claims the distinction of being the oldest Episcopal Church in Virginia and the oldest building of English origin still standing in the United States. Historians think it was built in 1632 because three bricks were found imprinted with the year 1632 when the east wall fell in 1887. It is a gothic style building with buttresses, stepped gables, and the original brick traceried windows. It has a Jacobean interior and a rood screen. The building is fully restored and is now a National Historic Shrine.
