Monk, William Henry

(Mar. 16, 1823-Mar. 1, 1889). British music educator, composer, and organist. He was born in London. Much of Monk's life was spent as an organist and choirmaster in London parishes. He served as musical editor for the important British hymnal, Hymns Ancient & Modern. It is said that the title of this hymnal came from his suggestion. The 1861 edition contained sixty of his arrangements and fifteen original tunes. He was also musical editor of the Parish Choir and The Scottish Hymnal. The Hymnal 1982 uses his arrangements or original tunes in twenty-one hymns, including his arrangement of Victory in “The strife is o'er” (Hymn 208), his arrangement of Darwall's 148th in “Ye holy angels bright” (Hymn 625), and his original tune, Unde et memores, in “And now, O Father, mindful of the love” (Hymn 337). He died in London.
