Mealy, Norman Carleton

(June 22, 1923-Mar. 12, 1987). Church musician, editor, and educator. Born in Troy, New York, Mealy received his B.S. in 1946 from the State University of New York at Potsdam. He studied at the Episcopal Theological School, 1957-1958. He was ordained deacon on Nov. 28, 1959, and priest on May 28, 1960. He was director of music at St. Mark's Church, Berkeley, 1948-1960, and he taught church music at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, 1952-1964. From 1961 to 1976 he was a member of the Standing Commission on Church Music, and from 1967 to 1976 served as chairman of its Service Music Committee. With his wife, Margaret Williams Mealy, he co-edited Sing for Joy: A Song Book for Young Children (1967). He was general editor of Songs for Liturgy and More Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1971), a supplement to The Hymnal (1940). With Judith Rock he wrote Performer as Priest and Prophet: Restoring the Intuitive in Worship Through Music and Dance (1988). He wrote stanza five of Hymn 205, “Good Christians all, rejoice and sing!”, and made several contributions to the Service Music section of The Hymnal 1982 (S 46, S 208, S 222). Mealy died in Berkeley, California.
