Holmes, Urban Tigner, III

(June 12, 1930-Aug. 6, 1981). Priest, seminary dean, teacher, and writer. He was born in Durham, North Carolina. Holmes received his B.A. in 1950 and his M.A. in 1954, both from the University of North Carolina. He received his M.Div. from the Philadelphia Divinity School in 1954. He was ordained deacon on June 26, 1954, and priest on Dec. 27, 1954. From 1954 until 1956, he was curate at St. Luke's Church, Salisbury, North Carolina, and chaplain at Catawba College. He was Episcopal chaplain at Louisiana State University from 1956 until 1966, and from 1959 until 1966, he was lecturer in Greek. Holmes received his S.T.M. from the Graduate School of Theology at the University of the South in 1962. In 1966 he became professor of pastoral theology at Nashotah House, and in 1973 he received his Ph.D. from Marquette University. From Aug. 1, 1973, until his death, Holmes was the ninth dean of the School of Theology at the University of the South. In 1975 he was elected to the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church. Holmes was a prolific writer. His major publications include Turning to Christ: A Theology of Renewal and Evangelization (1981), and (with John H. Westerhoff III) Christian Believing (1979, vol. 1 of the new Church's Teaching Series). He died in Atlanta, Georgia.
