Evans, Hugh Davey

(Apr. 26, 1792-July 16, 1868). Lay theologian and defender of high church principles. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Evans began to study law when he was eighteen, and entered practice on Aug. 19, 1815. Throughout his life, Evans was a widely published author and an editor of church journals. From 1843 until 1856, he edited The True Catholic, a high church journal under the patronage of Bishop William Whittingham of Maryland. He also published articles in the Protestant Episcopalian, The Register (Philadelphia), The Churchman, and The American Church Monthly. Evans was a leader in conventions of the Diocese of Maryland, a deputy to the General Conventions, 1847-1859, and a defender of the Union. He was a lecturer on civil and ecclesiastical law at St. James College, Washington County, Maryland, 1852-1864. Evans died in Baltimore.
