Dublin Agreed Statement

A statement issued in Aug. 1984 by the Anglican-Orthodox Joint Doctrinal Commission after the Episcopal Church began to ordain women to the priesthood. The Orthodox opposed the ordination of women, and there was considerable concern about the future of the consultation before the meeting. General agreement was noted in eucharistic doctrine, but differences in the two faith communities concerning the oneness of the church, the presence of sin and division in the church, and the understanding of Ecumenical Councils were also noted. The statement clearly presented problems and differences, but it also stated that none were insoluble and that tradition must be seen in dynamic terms.
