The Rt. Rev. John Thomas Tarrant was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of South Dakota on October 31, 2009 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He became Diocesan Bishop on February 2, 2010.
John was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1952 and raised in rural Michigan. He is a life- long Episcopalian, having been nurtured in the faith at St. John’s the Baptist Church in Otter Lake, Michigan. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1974 with a Political Science degree and received his Master of Divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1983. He has served congregations in Connecticut, Western Massachusetts and South Dakota. He has spent most of his baptized and ordained ministry serving in small Episcopal churches, and has worked with churches, laity and clergy on the deanery and diocesan level in the areas of ministry development, stewardship and conflict resolution.
He and his wife Pat have been married since 1990. Combined they have eleven grown children. Their daughter Jessica lives with them in Pierre, South Dakota.
