What Is Coaching?
The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines “coaching” as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
The Office of Black Ministries’ approach to coaching applies the Co-Active Model, which recognizes the coach and client as active collaborators in their fundamental coaching relationship. Our Christian stance assures us that people, no matter their circumstances, are by their very nature creative, resourceful, whole, and capable of decision-making. Therefore, as coaches, through resourcefulness, creativity, curiosity, and open-mindedness, we discover with our clients their own inherent capabilities that empower them to be the best version of themselves.
A Relational Approach
At its heart, our coaching approach is walking with another person in a way that is highly relational, deeply intentional, and always contextual toward transformation. This is what Jesus did throughout His ministry.
Each coaching relationship begins with a “covenant” or a goal that the client wants to achieve. Once this has been defined by the client, the coach listens deeply, asks powerful questions, reframes perspectives, and expands possibilities. These techniques lead the client toward actions and accountability that will aid the client in achieving the goal. The average length of time for executive coaching is 7-12 months.
