On December 20, the Senate passed S.1723 – Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act of 2023. We applaud the passage of this legislation, which would seek to address the harms caused to Indigenous communities and would “formally investigate, document, and report on the histories of Indian Boarding Schools, Indian Boarding School Polices, and the systematic and long-term effects of those schools and policies on Native American peoples.” The Episcopal Church supports this legislation, alongside our ongoing work to better understand our role in these boarding schools. We commend the Senate for passage and urge the House of Representatives to take up this legislation without delay and ensure it becomes law.
