What’s happening today?

• 8:30-9:30 a.m.: Morning Prayer, sermon by Julia Ayala Harris, president-elect of the House of Deputies (worship bulletin)
• 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Legislative Session (House of Bishops and House of Deputies)
• 2:30-5 p.m.: Legislative Session (House of Bishops and House of Deputies)
• 6-9 p.m.: Maryland Night

Note: Worship services are held in each house, with a prerecorded sermon streamed in both. 
Legislative sessions take place in both houses concurrently (in English and Spanish).

House of Deputies elects Rachel Taber-Hamilton vice president

The House of Deputies on July 10 elected the Rev. Rachel Taber-Hamilton as its vice president. She is the first ordained woman, and only the third woman, to serve in this capacity since the role of deputies’ vice president was created in 1964.

Deputies advance $100.5 million budget proposal for 2023-24 and process reforms

The House of Deputies, in an evening session on July 10, adopted a $100.5 million churchwide budget, sending the spending plan to the House of Bishops for final approval, likely on July 11.

Bishops and deputies pass measure broadening definition of Book of Common Prayer

The House of Bishops moved forward with a plan to expand and clarify what exactly the Book of Common Prayer is, ending hours of discussion with a unanimously adopted resolution on July 9. The House of Deputies concurred the following evening with a minor amendment, sending it back to the bishops for a final vote.

The House of Bishops rejected a resolution that “denounced many crisis pregnancy centers” on General Convention’s third day, responding partly to discussions on the floor about the danger of poorly nuanced statements about hot-button issues in a deeply divided nation. Several bishops also protested the decision to place more than 400 resolutions on the agenda of the four-day meeting, which forced so many to be placed on a consent agenda, where they could not be discussed before being voted upon.
