In a proposed Mind of the House resolution on Saturday, July 9, The Episcopal Church House of Bishops addressed many threats to democracy and deep divisions in the United States, including the rise of Christian nationalism.  

The Rt. Rev. Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis, asked Presiding Bishop Michael Curry what he wants the agenda of the Episcopal bishops to be.  

This is how he responded:

En una resolución propuesta por la Opinión de la Cámara el sábado 9 de julio, La Cámara de Obispos de la Iglesia Episcopal abordó muchas amenazas a la democracia y profundas divisiones en los Estados Unidos de América, incluyendo el surgimiento del nacionalismo cristiano.

La Reverendísima Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, obispa de la Diócesis Episcopal de Indianápolis, le consultó al obispo primado Michael Curry cuál vendría a ser la agenda de los obispos episcopales.

Así respondió:

“I’m very concerned about a country that I do love, and about us potentially being on the verge of living out the opposite of unselfish, sacrificial love. And I don’t mean that as rhetoric: I mean that as the only way that we will live together and have life together because the opposite is self-destruction. I say that as a follower of Jesus and as a human being. How can we help this country—and help our people to help this country—to bind up our wounds, to learn to live democracy, and to truly be a country where there is liberty and justice for all. That’s at stake. I never thought I would think this in my life. As a child of the Civil Rights movement—those who fought for equal rights and justice, and freedom for all, never questioned the fact that the democracy itself would hold. We have been forced to ask the question: Is e pluribus unum really possible? Is democracy possible? Is human equality possible? And I just believe that if we can help our people—and this is not partisan—if we can help our people to find their voice and claim the values and the ideals that most people probably believe, then maybe we can help find their voice and they can help others, and we can help to heal this land, and help this country join with others and heal God’s creation. That is the calling of the God who called us into being in the first place.  

“So, yeah, being an extrovert, I probably just thought out loud. And I just believe this house, the people in this room, you are so smart and capable and able, and faithful. And there may be the capacity to find our voice—not a partisan voice, but a follower-of-Jesus voice—that may help our people and our churches; and then maybe, in turn, the sensible center that is in this country and this world, to find its voice. I’m sorry for confusing you, but that’s part of what’s going on in me. Jennifer [Baskerville-Burrows], I can’t sit back and watch this country self-destruct, and neither can we. And I was looking for a way to help us find the voice that can help.”  

“Estoy muy preocupado por un país al que amo, y por la posibilidad de que estemos a punto de vivir lo opuesto al amor desinteresado y sacrificado. Y no quiero decir eso de forma retórica: Quiero decir que es la única manera en que vamos a coexistir y llevar una vida juntos porque lo contrario es la autodestrucción. Lo digo como seguidor de Jesús y como ser humano. Cómo podemos ayudar a este país—y ayudar a nuestro pueblo a ayudar a este país—a colmar nuestras heridas, a aprender a vivir la democracia y a ser verdaderamente una nación donde haya libertad y justicia para todos. Eso está en juego. Nunca pensé que consideraría esto en mi vida. Como hijo del movimiento de Derechos Civiles—quienes lucharon por la igualdad de derechos y justicia, y la libertad para todos, nunca se cuestionó el hecho de que la democracia misma se mantendría. Nos hemos visto obligados a formular la siguiente pregunta: ¿Es e pluribus unum (De muchos, uno) realmente posible? ¿Es posible la democracia? ¿Es posible la igualdad humana? Y simplemente creo que si podemos ayudar a nuestra gente—y esto no es partidista—si podemos ayudar a nuestra gente a encontrar su voz y reclamar los valores e ideales que la mayoría de la gente probablemente cree, entonces tal vez podamos ayudarlos a encontrar su voz y ellos puedan ayudar a otros, y podamos ayudar a sanar esta tierra, y ayudar a este país a unirse con otros y sanar la creación de Dios. Ese es el llamado del Dios que nos llamó a estar en el primer lugar.  

“Así que, sí, siendo un extrovertido, probablemente sólo pensé en voz alta. Y yo creo que esta cámara, la gente en esta sala, ustedes son tan inteligentes, capaces, y fieles. Y puede haber la capacidad de encontrar nuestra voz—no una voz partidista, sino una voz de seguidor de Jesús—que pueda ayudar a nuestro pueblo y a nuestras iglesias; y entonces quizás, a su vez, el centro sensato que está en este país y en este mundo, podrá encontrar su voz. Lamento haberlos confundido, pero eso es parte de lo que está pasando en mí. Jennifer [Baskerville-Burrows], no puedo sentarme y ver cómo este país se autodestruye, y nosotros tampoco. Y estaba buscando una manera de ayudarnos a encontrar la voz que nos pueda ayudar”.
