A Word to the Church

Holy Week 2016

“We reject the idolatrous notion that we can ensure the safety of some by sacrificing the hopes of others.”

On Good Friday the ruling political forces of the day tortured and executed an innocent man. They sacrificed the weak and the blameless to protect their own status and power. On the third day Jesus was raised from the dead, revealing not only their injustice but also unmasking the lie that might makes right.

In a country still living under the shadow of the lynching tree, we are troubled by the violent forces being released by this season’s political rhetoric. Americans are turning against their neighbors, particularly those on the margins of society. They seek to secure their own safety and security at the expense of others. There is legitimate reason to fear where this rhetoric and the actions arising from it might take us.

In this moment, we resemble God’s children wandering in the wilderness. We, like they, are struggling to find our way. They turned from following God and worshiped a golden calf constructed from their own wealth. The current rhetoric is leading us to construct a modern false idol out of power and privilege. We reject the idolatrous notion that we can ensure the safety of some by sacrificing the hopes of others. No matter where we fall on the political spectrum, we must respect the dignity of every human being and we must seek the common good above all else.

We call for prayer for our country that a spirit of reconciliation will prevail and we will not betray our true selves.

” Rechazamos la idólatra noción de que podemos garantizar la seguridad de algunos sacrificando las esperanzas de otros”.

El Viernes Santo las fuerzas del poder político del momento torturaron y ejecutaron a un hombre inocente. Sacrificaron al manso y al inmaculado para proteger su propio estatus de poder. Al tercer día Jesús resucitó de los muertos, revelando no sólo la injusticia [de sus ejecutores] sino desenmascarando también la mentira que podría hacerla viable.

En un país que vive aún bajo la sombra del árbol del linchamiento, nos perturban las fuerzas violentas que está desatando la retórica política de esta temporada. Los norteamericanos se están volviendo contra sus prójimos, en particular los que se encuentran en los márgenes de la sociedad. Buscan garantizar su propia seguridad a expensas de otros. Existe una legítima razón para temer adónde podrían llevarnos esta retórica y las acciones que de ella se deriven.

En este momento, nos parecemos a los hijos de Dios vagando en el desierto. Nosotros, como ellos, batallamos para encontrar nuestro camino. Ellos dejaron de seguir a Dios y adoraron a un becerro de oro fabricado a partir de su propia riqueza. La retórica actual nos conduce a hacer un moderno ídolo falso a partir del poder y el privilegio. Rechazamos la noción idólatra de que podemos garantizar la seguridad de algunos sacrificando la esperanza de otros. No importa donde estemos en el espectro político, debemos respetar la dignidad de todo ser humano y debemos procurar el bien común por encima de todas las cosas.

Llamamos a orar por nuestro país y porque un espíritu de reconciliación prevalezca y que no traicionemos nuestra genuina identidad.

La Cámara de Obispos de la Iglesia Episcopal se reunió en un retiro del 11 al 15 de marzo en el Centro de Conferencias de Camp Allen, en Navasota, TX.
