Griswold, Frank Tracy, III

(b. Sept. 18, 1937). Twenty-fifth Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. He was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Griswold received the A.B. at Harvard in 1959, and he attended the General Theological Seminary, 1959-1960. He received the B.A. in 1962 and the M.A. in 1966 from Oxford University. He was ordained deacon on Dec. 15, 1962, and priest on June 23, 1963. He served as curate at the Church of the Redeemer, Bryn Mawr, 1963-1967. He was rector, St. Andrew, Yardley, Pennsylvania, 1967-1974; and rector, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1974-1985. He was also an instructor in Anglican liturgical prayer and spirituality at the Lutheran Seminary in Philadelphia. On Mar. 2, 1985, he was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of Chicago. He served as Bishop of Chicago, 1987-1998, and was invested as Presiding Bishop on Jan. 10, 1998. He served as co-chair of the Anglican-Roman Catholic dialogue in the United States, and chair of the Standing Liturgical Commission. He contributed to writing Eucharistic Prayer “B” in the 1979 BCP.
