Galley, Howard Evans, Jr.

(Apr. 24, 1929-May 20, 1993). Author, editor, musician, and lay leader of the liturgical movement in the Episcopal Church. He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He received his B.A. from the University of Massachusetts and his M.A. from New York University. Galley was a member of the Church Army from 1951 to 1981. His ministry included missionary work among the Lakota Indians. From 1961 until 1981 he served as assistant to the Coordinator of Prayer Book Revision as an editor for the Trial Rites of the BCP and BOS. He was an editor of Seabury Press, 1980-1985. Galley had a vast and technical knowledge of both liturgy and language. He was a valuable resource in the 1979 revision process. He was the author of Eucharistic Prayer C, the reviser and translator of much of the catechumenal material in the BOS, and many other prayers and rubrics in both the BOS and the BCP. He produced two widely-used adaptations of the Daily Offices, The Prayer Book Office and Morning and Evening Prayer, and a ceremonial guide, Ceremonies of the Eucharist. He also edited the 1981 edition of White and Dykman, The Annotated Constitution and Canons, and the annual Episcopal Church Lesson Calendar. He worked as a free-lance editor after the closing of the Prayer Book Revision Office. He worked on The Hymnal 1982. He gave lectures and workshops, and served on the council of Associated Parishes for Liturgy and Mission. Galley died in Jersey City, New Jersey.
