Ellinwood, Leonard Webster
(Feb. 13, 1905-July 8, 1994). Hymnal editor and music historian. He was born in Thomaston, Connecticut, and received his B.A. from Aurora College in 1926. He received his Master of Music degree in 1934 and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1936 from the Eastman School of Music. He taught at Michigan State University before joining the Library of Congress Music Division in 1940. Ellinwood was ordained deacon on June 17, 1948, and retired in 1975 as Head of the Humanities Section of the Library of Congress Subject Cataloguing Division. He edited The Hymnal 1940 Companion (1949) and compiled the Dictionary of American Hymnology (1984). He wrote The History of American Church Music (1953).
