Coxe, Arthur Cleveland
(May 10, 1818-July 20, 1896). Leading figure of the high church party. He was born in Mendham, New Jersey. He graduated from the University of New York in 1838 and then from General Theological Seminary in 1841. He was ordained deacon on June 27, 1841, and priest on Sept. 25, 1842. He was rector of St. John's Church, Hartford, Connecticut, 1842-1854, Grace Church, Baltimore, 1854-1863, and Calvary Church, New York, 1863-1865. Coxe was consecrated Assistant Bishop of Western New York on Jan. 4, 1865, and became Bishop of Western New York on Apr. 5, 1865. He published several volumes of ecclesiastical poetry.
