Cowley Publications
The publishing ministry of the Society of St. John the Evangelist (SSJE), an Anglican religious order for men. Cowley Publications was founded in 1979 by M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE, and James Madden, SSJE, to revive the educational work of their order, which was then widely known as the Cowley Fathers. Cynthia Shattuck, a seminary-educated lay woman, was chosen to serve as editor of the press, and she was named director of the organization in 1994. Cowley publishes books that reflect the tradition of prayer, spiritual direction, and intellectual reflection nurtured by SSJE. In 1997 Cowley inaugurated the multi-volume New Church's Teaching Series as a successor to the earlier denominational teaching series of the 1950s and 1970s. James E. Griffiss is the series editor. See Society of St. John the Evangelist, The (SSJE) (Cowley Fathers).
