Burr, Nelson Rollins

(June 6, 1904-Jan. 10, 1994). Prominent historian of the Episcopal Church. He was born in West Hartford, Connecticut. Burr received his B.A. in 1927 and his Ph.D. in 1937 from Princeton University. His first position was supervisor of the Church Records Survey for the northeastern United States in the Works Progress Administration. In 1942 Burr became a research librarian at the Library of Congress. He held this position until his retirement in 1967. He wrote many parish histories in the dioceses of Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Among his many major publications are A Critical Bibliography of Religion in America, 2 vols. (1961), The Story of the Diocese of Connecticut: A New Branch of the Vine (1962), and The Anglican Church in New Jersey (1954). He was a long-time member of Grace Church, Hartford, Connecticut. Burr died in Hartford.
