Armed Forces, Suffragan Bishop for

The Constitution of the Episcopal Church states that it is “lawful for the House of Bishops to elect a Suffragan Bishop who, under the direction of the Presiding Bishop, shall be in charge of the work of those chaplains in the Armed Forces of the United States, Veterans' Administration Medical Centers, and Federal Correction Institutions who are ordained Ministers of this Church.” On Oct. 21, 1964, the General Convention elected Arnold Meredith Lewis (1904-1994), resigned Bishop of Western Kansas, to this position. At the consecration of Clarence Edward Hobgood as the second Suffragan Bishop on Feb. 2, 1971, at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Washington, the Episcopal Peace Fellowship staged a peaceful protest.
