Archivist of the Episcopal Church
The General Convention of 1940 appointed and designated the Church Historical Society “an official agency of General Convention for the collection, preservation, and safekeeping of records and historical documents connected with the life and development of the [Episcopal Church] . . . and to foster as far as possible the investigation of its history and the development of interest in all relevant research.” The Church Historical Society named Virginia Nelle Bellamy as archivist, and she served from June 1, 1959, until Dec. 31, 1985. The General Convention of 1985 passed a canon which established a Board of the Archives and Office of the Archivist.
