Brian N. Prior

Role of the Vice President of the House of Deputies

My faith journey began in a small church in a small farming community.  It continued to be formed and nurtured in the larger church through church camp, diocesan youth ministry, provincial ministry and through opportunities to serve at the larger church. I am blessed to have been a part of General Convention since the first convention I attended in Anaheim. I have served as an adult advisor for the Youth Presence, worked behind the scenes, served as a deputy, Chaplain to the House of Deputies at the 74th General Convention, Chair of the Legislative Committee on Communications and was elected at the 75th General Convention to serve as the Vice President of the House of Deputies.

Folks often ask me, “So what does the Vice President of the House of Deputies do?”  I always respond without even taking a breath, “Whatever the President asks me to do!”  The great news is that the President of the House of Deputies, Bonnie Anderson, and I have been friends and colleagues since the first EYE (Episcopal Youth Event) in the early 1980's.  Therefore, Bonnie is very aware of my strengths, gifts and interests and as such is able to utilize me where I may be the most effective.

Thus far during my tenure I have served on the President's Council of Advice, as an invited guest to Executive Council, on the Committee for Planning and Arrangements - with specific responsibility for the theme presentation, and the President’s Task Force on the House of Deputies Rules of Order.

My colleagues on Executive Council like to tease me about my endless camp analogies. Friend and fellow member of the President of the House of Deputies, Frank Wade, has often said that our history is always a prologue to the ministry we are presently called to.  My history with Bonnie Anderson, starting out in a small church in a small farm town, being a "camp kid" and being a part of General Convention for over 25 years all influence how I serve as the Vice President of the House of Deputies.
