Christopher A. Johnson named new jubilee officer

[Episcopal News Service] The Rev. Christopher A. Johnson has been named the new jubilee officer for the Episcopal Church. He will oversee domestic justice issues in his new role.

Currently the jubilee officer for the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado, Johnson serves a bilingual jubilee congregation in Denver, Colorado.

"A search committee has been at work on this appointment for some months and is very pleased to have presented its finalist to Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who confirmed the appointment," said the Rev. Canon Brian Grieves, director of advocacy at the Church Center in New York.

Johnson will begin his duties June 15.

In accepting the position, Johnson remarked, "It is my hope to encourage us to live into the fullness of our Christian witness as Episcopalians by holding before us the face of Christ, who is present in our midst as one who is widow, orphan, hungry, naked, sick or incarcerated; as one who is a resident or resident alien; as one who is a caregiver or receiver of care."

Jubilee Ministries, a program of the Episcopal Church since General Convention 1982, is now part of the new Advocacy Center under the Presiding Bishop's recent reorganization of Church staff.

"My hope is that Chris' leadership will increase our effectiveness in addressing issues of poverty and justice within the United States and overseas," said the Presiding Bishop. "This is an important complement to our ongoing work on the Millennium Development Goals in developing nations. Jubilee ministry goes on wherever the Church reaches out to change the lives of the poor and oppressed. There is no shortage of opportunity to share in this ministry."

Johnson will attend the Presiding Bishop's Summit on Domestic Poverty May 14-15 in Phoenix, for which he is a member of the design team.

"Chris will work closely with staff in our Washington office as well as colleagues at Church Center in New York," said Grieves.  "He arrives at the beginning of the newly configured Advocacy Center and I know his passion and considerable organizing skills will infuse all of us with renewed energy for the work of domestic justice. He can't arrive soon enough."

Johnson will be based in New York and work with the Jubilee Advisory committee.
