Notes from the June 19 9:30 a.m. media briefing

Greetings and appreciation were expressed from Presiding Bishop-elect Katharine Jefferts Schori.

Brief Wisdom:

"History, like tradition, is an ongoing, unfolding process which only comes to an end when God's kingdom comes in fullness. To examine our creedal assertion, 'Christ has died,' refers to the past; 'Christ is risen,' is about the present; 'Christ will come again,' is about the future. All time is in God's hands. History is not over, but it has taken a revolutionary turn." Bishop Chilton Knudsen, in response to a question from Anglican Mainstream, on the historical significance of the election of the 26th Presiding Bishop.

This morning's media briefers were Sam McDonald, Diocese of Ohio; the Rev. Sandye Wilson, Diocese of Newark; Bishop George Councell of New Jersey; and Bishop Chilton Knudsen of Maine.

The Houses will meet in a joint session at 2:30 p.m. to consider the Episcopal Church's budget for the next three years. Then at 3:30 p.m., the Bishops of Mississippi and Louisiana will address the joint session to talk about Katrina response and the ongoing "Darkness into Day" campaign to rebuild and restore the Episcopal Church in those two dioceses. 

After that session the Houses will resume their individual meetings.  The House of Deputies is due consider two Windsor Report resolutions this afternoon. Resolutions A160 (expression of regret) and A161 (election of bishops) are expected to come to the floor of the House of Deputies about 3:45 p.m. EDT. Special rules of debate will allow 45 minutes of debate on each resolution, with the first 30 minutes set aside for discussion without any procedural amendments. Deputies will have two minutes each to speak. Should the resolutions pass, they then will go to the House of Bishops for consideration.
