St. Dunstan’s Celebrates Ninth Annual MLK Weekend

St. Dunstan’s, The Episcopal Church at Auburn University, celebrated its Ninth Annual MLK Weekend on Jan. 19-20, 2008, to commemorate the life and ministry of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Civil Rights Leader & Martyr. St. Dunstan’s is one of the oldest campus ministries in the Episcopal Church, formed as one of seven “student inquiry stations” by the National Church office in 1919. Today, the Auburn University ministry has approximately 165 active student members and 110 “friends,” faculty and staff members and their families.

“This is the ninth consecutive year that we have held the celebration honoring Dr. King,” said the Rev. Dr. John Wells Warren, chaplain. “Over the years we have received funding from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, the Diocese of Alabama, and the Office of Young Adult and Higher Education Ministries at the Episcopal Church Center.”

Warren’s students and friends were joined by the choir and congregation of
White Street Baptist Church, an African-American congregation in Auburn, and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church at Tuskegee University. The Rev. Liston A. Garfield, rector of St. Andrew’s and chaplain to Tuskegee University, was the celebrant for the Festival Holy Eucharist on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 20. The Rev. Dr. Michael McQueen, senior pastor of St. James United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, Georgia, was the guest preacher. Dr. Johnny R. Green, Auburn University Dean of Students and pastor of White Street Baptist Church, was the master of ceremonies.
