Week Ahead: Deadline approaches for Episcopal committee nominations

[Episcopal News Service]  Tuesday, February 1 is the deadline to send applications to be considered as a nominee of the Executive Council, the General Board of Examining Chaplains, the General Theological Seminary and the Church Pension Fund. A slate of candidates will be selected by the Joint Standing Committee on Nominations to stand for election at the 2006 General Convention in Columbus, Ohio. Applications must be received or postmarked on or before February 1, 2005.

Coming up Friday, January 28, 2005...

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana - Major Mardi Gras parades begin in New Orleans Jan. 28 and continue each day through "Fat Tuesday," Feb. 8. The season will include nearly 80 parades with routes through the city and suburbs as well as nearby towns.
        St. George's Episcopal Church, 4600 St. Charles Ave. in the Garden District of New Orleans, hosts an annual Open House and Festival, Feb. 4-8. Parade watchers can enjoy traditional Mardi Gras food, and have a "home base" for carnival activities. Times are: Friday, Feb. 4, beginning at 4 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m.; Sunday, 8 a.m.; Monday, 4 p.m.; and Fat Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. til after the last parade.         Grace Church, 3700 Canal St. is THE spot to watch the most extravagant Mardi Gras parade, the Krewe of Endymion, which takes to the street on Saturday, Feb. 5, beginning at 5:45 p.m. The church offers parade-goers American and Hispanic cuisine from the church's portico.

NEW YORK - The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church (GTS) will sponsor a roundtable discussion titled "After the Windsor Report: The Future of the Anglican Communion," on Friday, Jan. 28, at 7:00 p.m. The program will bring together a distinguished panel representing a variety of viewpoints to consider the implications of the report, including questions such as: What is at stake for the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion? How should the Episcopal Church respond? How might the Anglican Communion change?
        The panel will include: the Rev. Ian Douglas, Ph.D., Professor of World Mission and Global Christianity at the Episcopal Divinity School; Bishop Henry Parsley of Alabama, Chair of the Theology Committee of the House of Bishops; the Very Rev. Titus Presler, Dean of the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest; and Suffragan Bishop Catherine Roskam of New York, Anglican Consultative Council member.
        The moderator will be Professor Robert Bruce Mullin, sub-Dean for academic affairs and professor of history and world mission. Professor J. Robert Wright, Saint Mark's Church in the Bowery Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Historiographer of the Episcopal Church, will offer concluding remarks.
        The event is free and open to the public and will be held in Seabury Auditorium on the GTS campus. SEATTLE, Washington - St. Mark's Cathedral, Seattle, will hold a Chinese New Year Celebration for the Year of the Rooster from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Jan. 28. The evening will feature a Chinese feast, dancing lions and dragon, games and entertainment. The official first day of the Chinese New Year is February 9, 2005.

ATLANTA, Georgia - The Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta will host "A Symphony of Sacred Texts" from in the Great Hall 7 - 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20. with a special look at God's answer to suffering and evil.
        The evening will offer an opportunity to find out what the Torah, Christian Scriptures, and the Koran say about various topics. Meet Rabbis, Christian Pastors, and Imams as they celebrate their Sacred Texts, and enjoy the company of the Atlanta Interfaith community. AUSTIN, Texas - St. Luke's on the Lake Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas, will host an event titled "The Bible, the Church and Homosexuality," from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m on Saturday, Jan. 29. BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Michigan - The sixth annual Interfaith Holy Day of Peace among the Religions of the World will be celebrated at a World Sabbath service at Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, on Jan. 29 at 7:00 p.m., with pre-service music beginning at 6:30 p.m.
        The service will feature speakers, leaders, and musicians from Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Jewish, Baha'i, Sikh, Native American, and Latin American cultures and traditions. Members of all faith communities are invited to participate in this service to pray for social justice and peace throughout the world.
        The Interfaith Holy Day of Peace was an initiative begun by two Episcopal priests, the Rev. Rodney Reinhart and the Rev. Edward L. Mullins, in 2000. In 2003, the General Convention of the Episcopal Church officially recognized the World Sabbath and recommended it as a model for the church's work for peace.

GLENDALE, California - The Southern California Ecumenical Council, representing 18 denominations in the greater Los Angeles region, will host an ecumenical celebration of the Word of God at  4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30, at First Lutheran Church in Glendale, Los Angeles. Special music will be provided. Everyone is welcome to this worship service and to a reception immediately after in the fellowship hall. Clergy are invited to vest in red and process.
        The preacher will be Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, primate of the Armenian Church of North America, Western Diocese. He has been a seminary lecturer on church history and came to California 18 months ago from Canada, where he served 17 years with the Canadian Council of Churches.
