Episcopal Relief and Development is providing critical assistance to families in and around Lexington, Kentucky, and after severe storms. Storms tore through several counties, including Floyd, Magoffin, Johnson, and Martin, destroying approximately 250 homes, damaging 4,000 others, and leaving hundreds homeless.
"Severe weather, including tornadoes, high winds, and heavy rain, that began last Thursday evening and continued over Memorial Day weekend, brought down power lines and flooded homes and businesses," said the Rt. Rev. Stacy F. Sauls, Bishop of Lexington. "Floods and mudslides have blocked roads and parkways," said Bishop Sauls.
On behalf of the Episcopal Church, Episcopal Relief and Development has advanced emergency funds to the Diocese of Lexington to provide temporary shelter, food, and clothing vouchers and other humanitarian needs. The funds will also assist with cleanup costs in eastern Kentucky's hard hit areas.
