Psalm Tone

A melodic formula for the unison singing of psalm texts. The tones correspond to the eight medieval modes. A ninth psalm tone, the Tonus Peregrinus, is also used for the singing of the psalms. Each psalm tone consists of two parts. The first part has an intonation, a reciting note and a mediation or cadence. The second part has a reciting note and an ending or final cadence. The first half of a psalm verse up to the asterisk ("*") is sung to the first half of the chant, and the second half of the text is sung to the second half of the chant. A Psalm Tone chart is found in The Hymnal 1982 Accompaniment Edition, Vol. 1, at S 446. See Plainsong.
