Messiah

From the Hebrew, "anointed" or "anointed one," indicating a person who has been anointed with oil. Messiah is translated in Greek as christos, and the title "Christ" is derived from it. The one who is ceremonially anointed is understood to be set apart by God with special powers and functions. In the OT, the anointed one most frequently refers to the king of Israel (1 Sm 10:1, 26:9, 11, 16, 23; 2 Sm 1:14, 16). Priests were also anointed (Ex 28:41; Lv 4:3, 5, 16).
